Why Use Hardware Cloth on a Hoop House?

The hardware cloth is necessary for keeping the tunnel builders out of our garden. We have a grand number of voles, moles, mice, squirrels, and other “diggers” here, and have learned that they will eat anything from the roots if we don’t make a barrier. The hardware cloth is available through Lowe’s hardware, they have the best price we have found for large rolls of it.

What are the Hoops Made of?

The hoops are metal, and we did not grout any of the block cavities. Instead, we filled them with gravel and dirt. There is a question of local building codes that make it a gray area if you are using cement, since these are considered “temporary agricultural structures” and therefore not subject to building code enforcement. So we designed it so it could be easily removed, relocated, etc.

Use of Plastic Film on The Hoop House

The plastic film is the kicker–some greenhouse companies carry a system of metal channels and “wiggle wire”. It holds the film really well, and is easy to put on. I will take a photo and add it above so you can see it up close.

Love and blessings!
