Observations and Anecdotal Information
Sunflower seeds were cultivated over 5,000 years ago by indigenous people of the Americas. Tribal peoples used multiple parts of the plant to ease snakebite, condition skin and hair, and as a food. It is used today in much the same way, as the nutrients and lecithin in sunflower help to alleviate skin redness, relieve acne, and reduce inflammation and skin irritation.
Sunflower seed botanical oil is high in vitamin E, which may provide it with moderate sun screen effects. This anti-oxidant helps protect the skin from damage by environmental factors. It contains beta carotene and other nutrients which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and protect the collagen in your skin.
It is especially helpful for dehydrated skin, as it is an occlusive, forming a barrier to prevent further moisture loss. It contains Omega-6 fatty acid, which helps reduce inflammation and enhances the development of new skin cells.
Sunflower seed oil contains alpha-linoleic acid, which also helps reduce inflammation, and may have a beneficial anti-infectious effect. Topical applications of sunflower oil have been applied to treat sepsis in infants.
Although our sunflower seed botanical oil is food grade quality, we recommend using sunflower oil very sparingly as a cooking oil in your diet. It is high in Omega-6, which needs to be in balance with Omega-3.
