Observations and Anecdotal Information

Allspice makes an excellent addition to a hot winter bath.  Its rubefacient properties open the pores, and stimulate circulation in the skin to release the exterior and warm the surface.  This makes a great bath for relieving arthritis, muscular and myofascial pain.

Taken internally (at proper dilution rate), allspice can relieve indigestion and soothe the stomach and digestive organs.  It is an antimicrobial that can balance yeast and relieve gas and bloating.

It has a warming aroma.  In the Napoleonic war of 1812, Russian soldiers put allspice powder in their boots to keep their feet warm.  The resultant improvement in foot odor has carried into today’s cosmetic industry, where the aroma of allspice is usually associated with men’s toiletries, especially products with the word ‘spice’ on the label.

Cautions

  • Allspice essential oil can be irritating to the mucous membranes for some people.
  • It can cause toxicity if consumed in large amounts.
  • Allspice should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
