Observations and Anecdotal Information
Cape may essential oil has been used traditionally as an insect repellant. Spraying a dilution of this oil on skin, bedding, or clothing has the effect of repelling all kinds of insects, flies, spiders, ants, etc. It has a much more pleasant aroma than many other insect repellant oils.
It is also useful as an odor neutralizer. On the Western Cape of South Africa, where it grows wild, cape may is used to neutralize odors such as fish, onions, etc. It makes a fine deodorant underarm spray as well.
As a febrifuge, it can bring down a fever. It is used to help the aches and pains of flu and colds, and to reduce sore throat pain that goes along with it. It has a mildly detoxifying property that is helpful when a cold has set in.
