Observations and Anecdotal Information
Costus root has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic herbalism.
It’s extracts have been used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers, lack of apatite, nausea and vomiting, and weight loss. It is known to effect the spleen and large intestine. It helps burn fat and increase energy levels.
It has also been used to treat respiratory conditions, including dyspnea, asthma, bronchitis, and coughs.
Costus root CO2 extract can be applied to wounds, to enhance healing and eliminate infection.
It is highly anti-inflammatory, and can relieve inflammation from injuries and arthritis.
The anti-microbial activity of this herb has been laboratory tested against gram positive bacteria including staphylococcus aureus and entereococcus faecalis; and gram negative pseudomonas aeruginosa and salmonella typhii, and found to be extremely effective.
Costus is also an especially strong immune system enhancer. It can be taken internally for this purpose, and should be diluted in very warm water with honey, and drunk as a tea. One to 3 drops of costs root CO2 extract added to a cup of water makes a tea that can be taken over a period of several weeks to strengthen the immune system.
Cautions
- Do not use for infants, small children, pregnant or lactating mothers.
- Can be sensitizing–do not use within 24 hours of direct sun or UV light exposure.
- Do not use for long periods, repeated use over months may cause sensitization.
