Observations and Anecdotal Information

A relatively new essential oil from down under, this oil is locally known as  “tick bush” because of the way cattle and wild animals rub against the branches to eliminate ticks.

Kunzea was first distilled by a Tasmanian farmer named John Hood, who noticed that the steel wire fence that had this strange plant growing near it, was not rusting, and decided to find out why.

The answer is contained within its biochemical makeup, which includes sesquiterpenes with powerful anti-inflammatory properties.  Along with the other compounds that make up the oil,  kunzea’s resulting properties include extremely powerful anti-inflammatory action, making it unique for applications like rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatism, where it can be rubbed “neat” (undiluted) on the affected joints to obtain immediate relief.

It also can be combined with other oils into a powerful massage blend, for the relief of sore muscles and aches. It has powerful anti-infectious and antimicrobial properties as well, making it a very effective essential oil for the treatment of many types of infection, including the common cold and flu.

Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it a great oil for treating insect bites and bee stings.  It relieves the inflammation and pain, as well as reducing the risk of infection.

Cautions

This oil is generally regarded as safe at normal doses.

Avoid use with pregnant and lactating mothers, infants, and small children.

May cause skin reaction in sensitive individuals.  Sensitive people should test the oil on the inside of the elbow for a  skin reaction.

Keep all essential oils away from eyes.

Store in a safe place, out of the reach of children.
