Observations and Anecdotal Information
St. Johnswort was traditionally harvested on St. John’s Day, the 24th of June. It was used to ward off evil by hanging the flowers over an icon in the home. This is how it became known as St. Johnswort.
It’s botanical name–“perforatum”, is indicative of how fast it can move through tissue and cells. It is one of the fastest penetrating natural substances known. It can help enhance the penetration of other essential oils, when added to blends that are intended to penetrate tissues.
This feature makes it a fine addition to blends for compressing on organs, as it will carry the other oils in fast and deeply. It is also good for deep tissue massage oil blends for the same reason.
It is a good choice for all types of bodywork. It supports and enhances the unwinding of cellular patterns from the myofascia; making it a great support for rolfing, acupuncture treatments, chiropractic adjustment, and deep tissue massage.
St Johnswort essential oil is used in treating a wide range of disorders, including pulmonary complaints, bladder problems, diarrhea and nervous depression. It is also effective in treating bed wetting in children.
It has a sedative and pain reducing effect, and is especially effective where there are menopausal changes triggering irritability, depression, and anxiety.
St. Johnswort essential oil is also a strong immune system builder. Laboratory tests have shown it to be effective against viruses, including the AIDS virus. It has been used to treat prostatitis, vaginitis, uterine inflammation, and inflamed kidneys.
